We visited Ruth & Derek Owen's farm today in Hopkinton, NH. Ruth and Derek were some of my mother's favorite people, and I spent a lot of time at the farm as a child. Spring is a fabulous time to visit the farm as there are baby animals everywhere! This lamb was born a few weeks ago, and he was a twin who was rejected by his mother, so he has been bottle fed from birth and is incredibly friendly. What an amazing experience to give a bottle to a baby lamb! We also saw pigs, chickens, guinea hens, cows, and horses. With all the baby animals around, there was lots of nursing going on and Zoe was intrigued. She kept asking if she could nurse from the animals. Watching the cows being milked was her personal highlight because not only did she get to touch a cow "na-na," but we even squeezed some milk from the cow's teat directly into her mouth, which she thought was the coolest thing. She said it was yummy and warm.
Zoe also loved the chickens, and was very excited to get to pick a freshly laid egg from the nest. Her egg was a beautiful light green (laid by an araucana hen), and we HAD to take it home. She is super excited to eat it for breakfast tomorrow morning!
My highlight, or course, was spending time with the horses. Zoe got to sit on the back of gentle Sam while he was eating his dinner. There was a pregnant mare at the farm who is due to give birth any day, so my hope is that we will go back again soon to meet this new addition to the farm. The mother horse is boarding at the farm, but Ruth has made arrangements to keep the foal as the newest addition to her herd. There is a very pregnant pig and a pregnant cow as well, so the baby animal cuteness is only going to get better in the next few weeks!
