Nobel prize winner Wangari Maathai visited my school today to plant a tree with my class. She was in town to do a book signing (she is on the board of SIT and has ties to our community) and she wanted to plant a tree with some young people while she was here. Laura Haskins, the teacher that I work with, has been planting trees with her class for the past 3 years ever since her students became inspired reading an article about Wangari Maathai in their Scholastic News. It was a proud, exciting moment for our class and our school! Zoe and Lester got to come along, and Zoe was lucky enough to get her hands on a shovel and help plant the tree!

Here is Wangari with some of our students...she was wonderful with the children, and they sang songs together while planting.

Here is Laura talking with Wangari.
